Fishing trips

At Marine Life Tours we are focused on enhancing marine life. Our fishing trips are about doing something to help build the local Opotiki Community Reef in some way. But once out on the ocean we also spend a time catching a few fish to bring home for a feed.

Our Fishing Trips are for about 3-4 hours. The time we can spend at sea is often very constrained. Opotiki has sand bar restrictions, meaning that even with good sea conditions it is best only to use the harbour entrance bar three hours either side of a high tide. Even so, just an hours fishing can be plenty of time to catch a feed of fish.

Although many find the bar crossing a really thrilling aspect of the day, safety is our first concern and we only use the bar on days deemed 'workable' by the Harbour Master.

Fishing trips work out at around $120 per person (2-4 people). We do provide rods and gear for those who don't have them. The monitoring that takes place goes toward our body of knowledge that is being collated about the Opotiki Community Reef.

What to bring.
If you have your own boat fishing rods and gear then please bring them. Local baits or soft baits are best.
Conditions on the ocean can be changeable so an extra layer of clothing and windbreaker is always advisable.

A chili bin- eski type container to take your fish away with you.
(If you do not have these items then MLT has extras on hand)

Disclaimer: Water activities always have a higher inherent risk factor attached to them. Marine Life Tours takes all due care and promotes safe boating and shore fishing practices but accepts no responsibility in the event of any mishap.

Shore based fishing expeditions

Opotiki is blessed with long open expansive sandy beaches just a few minutes drive away, or beautiful tree fringed rocky coves a mere 20 mins drive away.
A few hours fishing is usually plenty to catch something. All fishing rods, bait and tuition are given as needed. A record of your catch and effort is kept to help MLTs research efforts.

Early morning or evening fish times can be accommodated on request.

From mid September to December going whitebaiting along the rivers is also a good option. Other seasonal land based fishing options include wharf fishing, Harbour fishing, kingfish off the rocks and beach long lining.

Please phone or email us so we can make advanced plans.
